Halfway Done!<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">After the first five
days of my #winter10X10 challenge (read more about it <a href="http://theluckiestinaustin.blogspot.com/2017/01/the-winter-10x10-challenge.html">here</a>) – which, I admit
starting two days late due to a terrible allergy attack – I have a few thoughts
about the experience:</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">1) If you think about it, 10 items to wear is A
LOT. If you have three tops and three pants, you theoretically already have
nine outfits at your disposal!</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">2) While I have not done come up with an outfit
that I would consider terribly creative – not yet, anyway – I at least really
like the combinations I’ve built so far. All of them are worthy of repeating,
even after the challenge is up. I especially like that I included white jeans
in the mix, because I think they are an underrated winter clothing item that I
would typically dismiss.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">3) I’m slightly worried that I didn’t give
myself the ability to do a ton of layering. These five days have been relatively
easy to create, but I’m worried I’ve burned through the best combinations. We’ll
see how next week goes.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Apologies for the
poor iPhone photos. I can only blame laziness. What's really sad is that these are done WITH some enhancements to spruce things up. Yikes. Yes, I really am that pale.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In the adventures of
decluttering, this week I focused on some low-hanging fruit in my closet.
Here’s what I got threw out, sold, or donated:</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">1) About six pairs of disgusting old shoes. The organisms living in these shoes were probably wearing shoes themselves.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">2) An old coat that I told myself I would take
to the dry cleaners… five years ago.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">3) A paint-stained work shirt… WHY DO I KEEP
THINGS THAT ARE GROSS?!</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">4) An old North Face fleece jacket in a rad, 80s
magenta color.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">5) A neon purple dress that I should have bought
to go clubbing but actually wore to a bridal shower when I was 20-something.
Bless my heart. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I have been living
with a capsule wardrobe for about a year and a half (pretty much ever since I
went back to work after having Walter), and I can’t sing its praises enough.
There are several different ways to approach capsule wardrobes, but the gist is
you divide your wardrobe into capsules (I have four, for example), and when you
take one capsule out and hang all the clothes from it in your closet, you put
all the others away. You only dress from the current capsule, and when you are
ready to replace it with the next capsule, that’s also the time you edit down
your wardrobe (i.e. get rid of things you never wore) or make minor additions
to it. Capsuling is great to curb mindless spending and become intentional with
your wardrobe budget, get creative with the clothes you already have, and
appreciate your wardrobe by loving every piece in your capsule. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Because capsuling is
so focused on quality over quantity, I admit I work with fewer clothes in each
of my capsules, but the ones I do have are ones that I love. They make me feel
comfortable and great about this new post-baby mom bod I’m sporting. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">With the start of
the new year, I thought it would be fun to participate in an online challenge
called <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/winter10x10/">#winter10x10</a>, which essentially encourages participants to create a mini
10-piece capsule (including shoes) from which you select all your outfits for
10 consecutive days. This challenge is co-led by <a href="http://www.un-fancy.com/">the blogger who firstintroduced me to capsule wardrobes, Caroline of Un-Fancy</a>. (That last sentence
makes it sound like I *know* Caroline, so to clear up any confusion, I don’t
know her personally. I just <strike>stalk</strike> follow her like I would any fashion blogger,
OK? I’m not a monster.) <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I’ll divide my 10
outfits into two separate blog posts to come within the next week or so, but
for now, here’s a photo of all 10 pieces side by side, so you can see the types
of clothing I chose for this challenge. Unintentionally, there is quite a bit
of color going on here. That may end up being a great idea or a terrible one!
You’ll just have to wait and see! I'm drunk with power (...and pinot noir, if I'm being honest).</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">One of the <a href="http://theluckiestinaustin.blogspot.com/2017/01/welcome-2017.html">new year’s resolutions</a> I committed to earlier last week was to de-clutter by
removing at least one un-needed item from the house each day. I don’t have a
lot of “rules” around this resolution, except that I literally force myself to take
the item(s) out of the house. I can’t put it in a pile with the intent to
donate it all later. (I already have those piles in different closets all over
the house. Feel free to come over and peruse them. Looking for the September
2009 issue of Vogue? Got it.) In an effort to share what I’ve thrown out (or
sold through our neighborhood “Buy & Sell” Facebook group) – whether to
inspire you or just give you a laugh – here’s this past week’s list of trash:</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">1) About 20 cinnamon-scented pine cones that I
bought for $5 at Michael’s three years ago for a Christmas mantle decoration. When
I opened them up in late November to place on the mantle, I couldn’t help but
notice they did not, in fact, smell like cinnamon. More like dead bugs.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">2) Twenty pounds (a conservative guess, in my
estimation) of junk and expired food from our laundry room pantry where we keep
kitchen appliances, bulk food, and some cleaning supplies. This garbage came
from a major reorganization of the entire closet. The funniest thing to go was
half of a 48-pack of low-sodium canned V8 juice that Andy bought me during a
pregnancy-induced tomato juice kick in 2015. RIP, V8.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I
didn’t take a photo of the “before” state of this closet, but to give you an
idea, it closely resembled this:</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Well, sugarplums,
2016 has come to an end, and I’m not terribly sad to see it gone. It feels like
every celebrity has passed away, and the only one still standing is now our
President-Elect. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I do need to
acknowledge that on a personal level, the year was good to us. Walter
celebrated his first birthday in the Spring, and I think I am finally at a
point where I’m *sort of* convinced I can *maybe* be a decent parent and raise
him right. (Honestly, though, who knows?) I was fortunate enough to take the
first steps into a new (teaching) career, and Andy continues to kill it in his
role at work and with his marathon running. Plus, my brother moved to
Austin in early Fall, and it’s been lovely to see him more often.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">And now it’s the
beginning of a new year, so this is the requisite blog post where I tell the four
of you reading this what my goals and resolutions are; then, I make a really
bold statement about blogging much more this year than I ever have. (Soon it
will be June and time for my subsequent blog post. It’s nice to have
traditions, isn’t it?)<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">On Monday, I opened
up an extra notebook I had laying around and jotted down a few goals for myself
in 2017. Nothing crazy, and all fell in the realm of taking better care of
myself, my family, and my home – and doing so moderately, over time, with small
steps focused on a bigger outcome. But then something funny happened. Without
much thought, I began writing this Bridget-Jones's-Diary-type log of what I had
done that day to address each of my goals. Instead of writing what I weighed in the
morning and what I ate that day and how many “units” of alcohol I drank (Oh
Bridget, you silly so-‘n-so!), my diary listed what type of exercise I
completed, or what clutter I had removed from my house. I did the same thing
the next day. And the next. And today, as well. We’ll see how long I can keep
this up, but I admit there is something so gratifying about seeing these bits
of progress in print, and I feel oddly accountable to myself to have something
to record at the end of the day.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Until next time! <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I
recently finished a book called <u>The Object of My Affection</u> by Stephen
McCauley, which was the inspiration of the 1998 movie of the same name,
starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd (in his first big role after <i>Clueless</i>.) The movie was one of my
favorites during my high school and college years, but I can’t really tell you
why. It wasn’t a movie starring any teens, and it wasn’t written for teens, but
my VHS copy was worn down with consistent use; in fact, that VHS has survived
half a dozen moves and is still at my house today… and I watched it about six
months ago.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Manhattan is by far one of my favorite places in the world, and while I have

subtle satire is your thing, give this book a try. Despite the publish date, I

liked the cover and the story sounded mildly interesting. In a nutshell, the
protagonist (Eve) moves to NYC to follow in the
footsteps of her mother, who lived there during the 1960s. Her apartment is
haunted by a ghost from the same era, but by no means is this a scary story.
This book is not going to win any awards, but I love the way it weaves

the story is that it’s told in first person through the eyes of Lacey’s friend;
he teeters back and forth between loving and hating her; and as the reader, I

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Hello, 2016! It’s time for my annual new year’s resolution
post, which makes up approximately 25 percent of my total blog content each year.
I’m so proud.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Last year, I talked about making <a href="http://theluckiestinaustin.blogspot.com/2015/01/whats-word.html">progress</a>
in a few different aspects of my life, and as I reflect back on 2015, I’m
comfortable saying I was mildly successful. While there were some areas that I
feel lacked major attention (hello, dieting and exercising!), I think focusing on<i> progress</i> allowed me to
ease up on the extremity I normally place on myself when it comes to goals.
Typically, I follow a “go big or go home” ideology. My goals typically look
like, “Wake up every day at 5:00 a.m. for an hour-long intense meditation!” instead
of “Develop a morning routine that feels good and encourages productivity.” My
focus on <i>progress</i> allowed me to be
kinder to myself about the approaches I took toward self-enhancement.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In a similar vein, this year, I’m focusing on <b>balance</b>. The internal, emotional,
psychological kind. (Anyone who has seen me exit a car, carry more than two
bags of groceries, or walk across a room knows I don’t possess physical balance
whatsoever.) I’d like to live this year with a mindful -– yet guilt-free –- approach to my home life, personal life, work life, and health life, embracing
the opportunities I get in the moment to improve each one.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

through Houston in 1991. The off-and-on nature of our relationship is one
that I’m sure most brother-sister siblings have endured. Luckily, ours evaporated a few years later, and I finally understood I could – gasp! – be <i>friends</i> with my brother.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Historically, I’ve had
the “I’ll try anything” mindset when it comes to health and beauty products. If
I had a coupon, I would snatch it up. Over the past year, however, I’ve become
very loyal to the products that I find to work well. Below are my top five.
Some of these are obviously <i>pregnancy</i>
related, but others are products I have used or know I will continue to use for
years to come…<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

doesn’t take a lot of convincing to get me into a relaxing bath, but I started
using this product years ago while training for half and full marathons – it
did wonders for sore muscles. I picked it back up during the second trimester
of my pregnancy to relieve an aching back that seemed to spike in the evenings.
I really do believe that it not only relived my back pain but it also helped
ward off leg cramps during the night. Eucalyptus Spearmint is my preferred
scent, although they have a few others to choose from, such as Lavender and
Chamomile. (Price: </span><a href="http://www.target.com/p/dr-teal-s-epsom-salt-soaking-solution-relax-relief-3-lb/-/A-13417445"><span style="line-height: 107%;">About $5/bag</span></a><span style="line-height: 107%;">)<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Where have you been since I turned 12? Seriously, I don’t know what kind of
voodoo witchcraft is going on at the Clarisonic headquarters, but my face has
never been as clear as it is after a month and a half of using this device.
After doing a lot of research, I decided that the “Mia2” was a better option
for my skin, because it has a <i>delicate</i>
setting for sensitive skin that the Mia doesn’t come with. To me, that was
worth the extra $50. Or rather, it was worth asking for something that cost $50
more at Christmas. I received this gift from my brother-in-law who drew me in
the Naumann Family Secret Santa… which really means I should thank my
sister-in-law who knew what is was and where to buy it. Thanks, Heather! Where
would my skin be without you? (Price: </span><a href="http://www.clarisonic.com/shop-our-products/clarisonic-mia-2-CL12.html"><span style="line-height: 107%;">About $150</span></a><span style="line-height: 107%;">…

hereditary and not something you can prevent, no matter how many beauty
products you use. I have no idea if that’s true or not, but I’ll happily rub
something all over my torso if it means I can smell like a chocolate bar all
day, amiright? (Seriously, though, I’d love to hear from folks who have had
stretch marks and how their body recovered.) to our table. Why I needed to describe those dinners as “elaborate” seems like
a really cruel joke to play on myself. And while I did cook up two new meals for
us this month, I would hardly describe either of them as “elaborate.” Both are
quick to prepare, full of easy-to-find ingredients, and relatively healthy. (And
just so we’re clear, my definition of <i>healthy</i>
is anything that is <u>not</u> a frozen pizza.)<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Lemon-Garlic Shrimp and Grits<o:p></o:p></span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I love shrimp and grits and realized I had never made it at home. I
grabbed this recipe straight from the Food Network website and made only a few
minor alterations, so I’m simply going to include the link, a photo, and a few
notes on what I changed.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Notes<o:p></o:p></span></i><br />
<div style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo2; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">·<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal;"> </span>I used a bit more garlic, because I think it
pairs really well with the lemon juice. Plus, it makes for great breath the
next morning.<i><o:p></o:p></i></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo2; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">·<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal;"> </span>When I revisit this recipe – which I will
definitely be doing – I will make sure to use actual parmesan cheese. I had
some leftover dry gourmet cheese that I shredded and threw in for the sake of
convenience, and I think it did affect the taste. Believe me, though, I still
ate. it. all. <i><o:p></o:p></i></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo2; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">·<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal;"> </span>I couldn’t find fresh parsley at the grocery
store the week I prepared this meal, so I used dried parsley. I didn’t lose
sleep over the modification, but I bet it would have been a zingier finished
meal with fresh parsley. <i><o:p></o:p></i></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Breakfast Pizzas </b>(recipe serves 2)<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">For my second meal, I definitely drew inspiration from Haylie Duff’s Real
Girl’s Kitchen, and you can check out the demonstration for her Avocado, Prosciutto,
and Radish Tartine recipe <a href="http://videos.huffingtonpost.com/food/haylie-duffs-avocado-prosciutto-and-radish-tartine-recipe-518273933">here</a>.
However, I made so many changes that I actually listed out my process below and
gave this meal my own name.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This dinner turned out to be a great option -- we ate it twice in
January. Plus, it was typical for us to have all the ingredients in our house without
making a special trip to the store. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

</span><!--[endif]-->Approximately 1 tbsp of Louisiana hot sauce or your
preferred hot sauce<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></i>
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Instructions<o:p></o:p></span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Step 1: </b>Slice the avocado(s) down
the middle and spoon all the avocado goodness into a small bowl. Mash up the
avocado to the consistency of guacamole. Once you’ve finished, set the bowl
aside. Discard the avocado pit and skin. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Step 2: </b>Heat a large skillet to
med-high, and drizzle the olive oil throughout the surface of the pan. Crack
the four eggs and drop them on to the pan. Allow the eggs to cook for about 3
minutes. You can adjust the cook time based on how runny you like the eggs.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Step 3: </b>Flip the eggs over within
the skillet and cook for an additional 3 minutes. Meanwhile, pop the sandwich
rounds into the toaster using a light-med setting. <b><o:p></o:p></b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Step 4: </b>Remove the skillet from
the heat and set aside. Then, take a sandwich round and spread a dollop of
mashed avocado in between the two slices, creating a kind of “avocado sandwich”.
Also, spread a dollop of mashed avocado on top of the “sandwich.” Repeat this
step for the other 3 sandwich rounds.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Step 5: </b>Sprinkle all the shredded
cheese among the four avocado-topped sandwich rounds. Then, lay a slice of prosciutto
on top of each sandwich round. Finally, using a spatula or similar tool, dish a
cooked egg on top of each slide of prosciutto. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Step 6:</b> Sprinkle as much salt and
pepper as you like on top of each egg. Shake out the hot sauce on top of each
sandwich.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Serve each person two pizzas and enjoy! (We typically have a side salad with
this meal, too.)<o:p></o:p></span><br />

One day it's below freezing, and the next, it's 60 degrees with blue skies. The climate here can change faster than my hair color. (Editor's note: I have no idea what my actual hair color is. It could be red. Could be brown... But, let's be honest, it's probably grey.)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Because of the unpredictable temperatures, it's important to me to have a few key pieces that I can wear for months on end and still create relevant outfits, regardless of the weather. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This year, those pieces have often been red... Red denim, red tops, red shoes and accessories. This color theme worked really well around the holidays, for obvious reasons, but now I'm thinking about how to incorporate them on warmer days that will inevitably pop up during the next three months. Here's my ideal transitory outfit...</span><br />

For 2015, I have again set a goal number, although at 15 books, it's significantly lower than in years past. (I figure I'll cut myself some slack, because I hear newborns take up a decent amount of your time.) </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I usually start the year already knowing some of the books I plan to read. Below are 10 of my 15 books for 2015, along with a quick synopsis of each one (in no particular order):</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">1) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/wild-cheryl-strayed/1110776475?ean=9780307476074">Wild</a></u> by Cheryl Strayed</span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I mentioned this book in <a href="http://theluckiestinaustin.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-january-to-do-list.html">my last post</a> as a book I had already started and want to finish by the end of the month... but because I started it on December 31, I figure I can count it within my 2015 list. A young woman hikes solo across the Pacific Crest Trail, and along the way, she recounts events in her life that led her to tackle the hike.</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">2) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/not-that-kind-of-girl-lena-dunham/1118048829?ean=9780812994995">I'm Not That Kind of Girl</a></u> by Lena Dunham</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Girls<i> creator/producer/director/actress Lena Dunham provides a series of essays about growing up. I'm a </i>Girls<i> fan and love Lena's writing "voice."</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">3) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/understudy-david-nicholls/1100394400?ean=9780812971415">The Understudy</a></u> by David Nicholls</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>After I read <u>One Day</u></i> <i>by David Nicholls, I knew I had to read more. Nicholls's second novel (and the one written before <u>One Day</u>), is about an understudy who is envious of the actor he is following and unfortunately then falls in love with his wife.</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">4) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/us-david-nicholls/1119128760?ean=9780062365583">Us</a></u> by David Nicholls </span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Another promising novel from David Nicholls, <u>Us</u> was published only a few months ago. In attempt to save his 30-year marriage and bond with his son, a man takes his family on a trip to Europe.</span></i><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></i>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhihk8EmRauYEuOAPuuaOH-qlBsAI-xhsjsv35utoFdoQKn1qXDIxUBgwuESaUNRpnlL6X1inZUntT3WtRM0q77_ST5FUjfzETRSngNHrUXDsZkhU-62lgMnOvr0CDPdJkDehshNRT4MsC-/s1600/David+Nicholls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhihk8EmRauYEuOAPuuaOH-qlBsAI-xhsjsv35utoFdoQKn1qXDIxUBgwuESaUNRpnlL6X1inZUntT3WtRM0q77_ST5FUjfzETRSngNHrUXDsZkhU-62lgMnOvr0CDPdJkDehshNRT4MsC-/s1600/David+Nicholls.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I might have a slight obsession with British author David Nicholls.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">5) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/yes-please-amy-poehler/1119614549?ean=9780062268341">Yes, Please</a></u> by Amy Poehler</span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Amy Poehler is hilarious. That's all you need to know.</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">6) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/louise-brooks-barry-paris/1004021165?ean=9780816637812">Louise Brooks: A Biography</a></u> by Barry Paris</span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">After reading <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-chaperone-laura-moriarty/1107390544?ean=9781594631436">The Chaperone</a></u> by Laura Moriarty, I became fascinated with silent film star Louise Brooks. My brother recommended this biography to me, saying it was not only a great overview of Louise's life, but also a great history on that era of entertainment and film. This is the longest book on my list, clocking in at 609 pages.</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">7) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/my-life-in-france-julia-child/1100267500?ean=9780307277695">My Life in France</a></u> by Julia Child</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><i>(Hopefully the title excuses me from writing a sentence summary.) I don't know why I haven't read this book yet. I love Julia Child, I <strike>love</strike> appreciate cooking, and this just seems like one of those books you'll want to curl up with and read straight through. </i> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">8) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-pink-suit-nicole-kelby/1115995082?ean=9780316235655">The Pink Suit</a></u> by Nicole Mary Kelby</span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This story follows a seamstress named Kate who tailored many clothes worn by former First Lady Jackie O. Kennedy, including the iconic pink suit worn the day President Kennedy was assassinated. With so much focus on the suit, Kate's life becomes a bit more complicated after President Kennedy's death. </span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">9) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-paris-apartment-michelle-gable/1116824516?ean=9781250048738">A Paris Apartment</a></u> by Michelle Gable</span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">An American travels to Paris to uncover all the treasures and secrets within a historic apartment, including a famous painting stored there. She becomes extremely interested in the woman depicted in the painting, and subsequently reveals some truths about herself in the process.</span></i><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></i>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">10) <u><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/imperfectionists-tom-rachman/1100037065?ean=9780385343671">The Imperfectionists</a></u> by Tom Rachman</span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This books follows the complicated lives of the staff members at an English newspaper in Rome. The journalism major in me is super excited to read this one.</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Any books you're planning to read this year?</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Oftentimes, I like to think about things I want to accomplish in the
time frame of a month. To me, a month seems long enough to meet my goals, but
not too long that I’ll forget. Plus, I like to make sure I’m throwing in some just-for-fun stuff, along with the to-dos I consider necessary. I keep a little notebook
in my purse and make my monthly lists as I think of them. Here’s my
January list:<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>1)<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-weight: normal;"> </span></b><!--[endif]--><b>Decide on the nursery theme.<o:p></o:p></b></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I got so hung up on the paint colors for the
nursery that I became blinded to any other aspect of decorating for it. I want
to have the theme (including the crib sheets, curtains, and wall art)
identified by the end of the month. If you have any ideas, send them my way!
Our nursery colors are orange (light, like an orange sherbet) and light gray. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">

<div style="margin-left: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The Harry Ransom Center is an amazing research
library on The University of Texas campus, and I am consistently in awe of the
exhibitions they create. They have a ton of documents and artifacts from the production
of one of my favorite movies, so adding this to my “to-do list” is a bit like
adding a reminder to eat a cookie. It’s a no-brainer.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Hi, lovelies! Happy new year! Can we just <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">not</i> talk about how long it’s been since I last posted? There’s no
amount of justifying I can do to make an almost-8-month hiatus sound reasonable,
so let’s just move on and say that I missed this dear ol’ blog of mine.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">With any new year comes new resolutions, right? Personally, I love
resolutions. I love making them, breaking them, and obsessing about them in
between it all. I typically make way too many, only to abandon every single one
by February 1. </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The trap I fall into is that I tend to have an “all or nothing” mentality.
The first day I press <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">snooze</i> on my
alarm, don’t go to the gym, or decide to eat a double cheeseburger instead of a
salad, I’m more inclined to ditch my resolution, rather than recover.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So, for kicks, I decided to make only one resolution for 2015. And it’s not
even a resolution – it’s more of a mantra. Instead of drafting a dozen of
seemingly unrelated goals, I’m going to focus on one word to get me through the
year:<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbM_8VpcNnidM69x5BpFP23bWPFQxzPO55NdsBgZzsth4TzMTyafPyvBqdXWy90m7GE_twkujujq_qwBzzrCqyzILun8_eAaeh9mETEnTVcoEtgBrPsHeShs3JeqyQz1GsUQ8DvbEjQ63P/s1600/progress.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbM_8VpcNnidM69x5BpFP23bWPFQxzPO55NdsBgZzsth4TzMTyafPyvBqdXWy90m7GE_twkujujq_qwBzzrCqyzILun8_eAaeh9mETEnTVcoEtgBrPsHeShs3JeqyQz1GsUQ8DvbEjQ63P/s1600/progress.png" height="76" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I’m trying to focus my energy, my drive, and my positivity on the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">progress</i> (no matter how minor) I'm going to make toward
a productive and meaningful 2015. Hopfully I can use this blog to provide updates on how it's all going.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">What’s your word for 2015?<o:p></o:p></span>Jennhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18037298915312278234noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7860215288418734274.post-45138549234954377752014-04-19T08:00:00.000-07:002014-04-19T08:00:01.012-07:00Fella<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Today, my fella is another year older. Many people (rightfully so) argue that you shouldn't need a new year to embrace change, but if you're like me, you sometimes need a reminder that it's time to reflect and reprioritize. Here are my 2014 resolutions, in no particular order:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipMKEoT-K7zF4GBSHbSzfj4LrBqp7SiY7CM1glcwTd7Yj55NZLhq2J5lUJNdtUVGSoy7S6OEGW6uroClU9qodFvSwb-W0_K7CDCQXp-0KyXMm12F_I8OSqpGs-L915PBoOI1AbCeV4hG25/s1600/Resolutions.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipMKEoT-K7zF4GBSHbSzfj4LrBqp7SiY7CM1glcwTd7Yj55NZLhq2J5lUJNdtUVGSoy7S6OEGW6uroClU9qodFvSwb-W0_K7CDCQXp-0KyXMm12F_I8OSqpGs-L915PBoOI1AbCeV4hG25/s1600/Resolutions.png" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>Get organized: </b>When we moved into our a house a little over a year ago, Christmas and our wedding were quickly approaching, so Andy and I mostly shoved unnecessary items into random closets. Let's fix that.</span></div>
<br />
<b style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Get cultured: </b><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Every time I see a great film, read a great book, or actually cook a meal from a cookbook (and not from the back of a box of instant mashed potatoes), I always catch myself saying, "I should do this more often!" Here's to putting my money where my mouth is.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<b style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Get healthy: </b><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Eat better, exercise more, get on a regular sleeping schedule. It's pretty simple. I don't know why I make it so hard for myself.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<b style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Get goin': </b><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">This resolution will definitely be the most challenging, but it has the potential to be the most rewarding, too. I am terrible at waking up in the morning, but on the rare occasions that I do get out of bed and start the day early, I have noticed that I am far more productive, and actually make better, healthier choices throughout the day.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">What are you resolving to do differently this year, friends?</span>Jennhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18037298915312278234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7860215288418734274.post-17241419308914675132013-08-28T06:00:00.000-07:002013-08-28T06:00:11.575-07:00Functional Fall<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">September is almost here, and with that comes the requisite back-to-school shopping. Even though I haven't been a "student" in any kind of capacity for years, I still do my part for the U.S. economy by hitting the stores with my wish list. You're welcome, America.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Fall is by far my favorite time of year, and when it comes to embracing a new season's fashion, I am drawn to color more than patterns or silhouettes. I love this season's new take on army green, a more muted, mossy hue (<a href="http://www.pantone.com/pages/fcr.aspx?pg=21057&ca=4" target="_blank">Pantone's fall report</a> calls it Deep Lichen Green). Paired with a couple of leathery chocolate brown accessories (again, Pantone calls this color Carafe) and a pop of deep purple (Pantone lingo: Acai), it's a subtle take on a very current palette.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What are you planning to pick up while you shop for fall? We've continued the ritual, and now I take the dog out at least once or twice a week for a hike... Actually, there's no way that what the two of us do can be classified as a hike. A "hike" implies that I'm wearing an anorak and boots and carrying a water pack on my back, but I'm actually repurposing my road running shoes, and I forget my Dasani bottle most of the time. A "hike" also implies that I can identify different types of plants and tree bark, but all I really do is dodge cobwebs and try not to step on lizards.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Welcome to the blog! I'm Jenn, and that tall guy next to me is Andy. We got married in February and are livin' life in Austin, Texas, home of live music and breakfast tacos, two things we don't get to enjoy enough. This blog is our little space on the interwebs where we can share what we're up to with anyone who wants to know (hi, Mom).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
Like all great couples, we met at a bar. I was wearing high-waisted jeans (awkward), and Andy was eight days in to growing a beard (way awkward), but miraculously we still found one another attractive. Three and a half years later, we got engaged on a football field, where we <i>thought</i> we were alone but in fact were not (a story for another time...). And at our wedding reception 10 months following, the first song we danced to was "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds. </span><br />

<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">"... And where was I before the day that I first saw your lovely face?</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now I see it everyday. And I know that I am the luckiest."</span></i></div>

We're definitely not perfect, but as long as we have each other, we are The Luckiest. :) See you soon!</span>Jennhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18037298915312278234noreply@blogger.com1
